The biggest challenge faced by job searchers is the problem of chasing every “job opportunity” that comes across your screen. I’ll explain exactly why that happens and how you can elevate your job search so that hiring managers and recruiters are chasing you instead.
I’ve been coaching job candidates now for over 25 years as an executive recruiter, also called a headhunter. Back when I was actively recruiting I would touch base with 20 potential new job candidates every day, 5 days per week.
Over the years I’ve learned a few things… actually some very profitable Insider Secrets… and I’m going to give you all of them on this Blog and my various coaching programs. I’m not going to hold anything back. I know these Secrets work because I have earned a good living using them. Executive recruiters either learn what works or they go hungry!
Today’s employment marketplace is tough and ugly for a lot of you but, the way I see it, there are only 7 steps you need to pay close attention to. You must:
- Build a powerful new mindset that will open you up and attract new opportunities. Every time someone mentions “mindset” these days it seems they need to ensure you that they aren’t tree huggers or engaging in some sort of esoteric woo-woo science. My stance on this “mindset” subject is that it just might be the most important aspect of your job search. I’ve personally interviewed thousands of job candidates and very often it was a matter of “mindset” that set the winners above all the rest. You can’t fake it and I’m going to tell you how you can get this winning mindset so you can rise above your competition and get the hiring manager to want to hire you on the spot.
- Develop the basic tools you will need to highlight your talents and experiences. You’re going to have to create the new tools for today’s job search but they don’t have to be perfect and they’re not that hard to create. You will need a decent résumé that communicates your experience, education and accomplishments in a format that is easy to scan, read and understand. You will need a cover letter that presents you as the solution to the hiring manager’s problems. You will need an Online presence through your Personal Website, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. These are all easy and can be done at little to no cost to you.
- Position yourself so you stand out above your competition. Corporations and headhunters conduct searches very quietly these days using the latest tools to find job candidates that fit their basic qualifications. The “hidden job market” has grown bigger because no company or recruiter wants to run an ad for a position and receive a thousand résumés from candidates who don’t have even the most basic requirements. They want to sharpen their focus and find the best candidates as quickly as possible. I’ll show you how they do it and how you can position yourself so that they are pursuing you and not you pursuing them.
- Secure the interview with the hiring manager. The “gatekeepers” job is to block you from accessing those who have the power to hire you. It’s a waste of your time and energy to fight them every day and I’ll show you several ways to get around them. I guarantee you that when a hiring manager sees a job candidate who can solve his or her problems they will demand that you be invited in for a live interview as soon as possible.
- Control the interview and get them to want to hire you on the spot. You absolutely must understand who holds the power during the interview and know how to recognize when that power switches over to you. You’ll feel it immediately because you’re no longer discussing trivial subjects but you are actually working on possible solutions to the work problems you will be hired to solve.
- Negotiate your new deal like a true professional. There are basic rules and specific techniques you can use to maximize your new salary and any and all the benefits that come with your new job. I will share with you some of the biggest mistakes ever made during live interviews and show you how to avoid them.
- Close the deal on both ends so everyone is happy. The deal isn’t complete until you resign your current position, if you have one, and report to work at your new company. There are some important details to take care of on both ends to ensure a smooth transition into your new and better position.
Okay, until my next post I will say goodbye and encourage you to ask me any questions you might have using the Contact Us form. I will do my best to get back to you with an answer as quickly as possible. Thank you for your time and I look forward to getting to know you better.
